A: A variety of groups and trading styles can benefit from Keyboard Trader:
- Proprietary trading firms
- Independent futures traders
- Hedge funds
- Spread trading
- Active trading
- Event trading
- Intraday trading
- Order flow trading
Q: What types of products can I trade with your software?
A: Keyboard Trader allows you to trade futures and spreads at many different exchanges. See the Technical Specifications page in the software section for details.
Q: How does Keyboard Trader connect to the markets?
A: Keyboard Trader connects to the markets through the APIs of other trading software providers. This allows you to use Keyboard Trader as an add-on to your current trading platform without replacing anything you have now. If you have an interest in using Keyboard Trader in conjunction with another Base Platform we aren't connected to yet, please let us know.
Q: How is my brokerage involved?
A: The brokerage does not need to be involved. We take payments direct from customers, and we provide software and keyboards direct to customers.
Q: Is trading with a keyboard safe?
A: If used properly, absolutely. We have embedded multiple levels of safety into our software. And we only sell keyboards that meet our strict testing standards.
Q: Can I use more than one keyboard? Do I need multiple software licenses?
A: You can plug in multiple keyboards per workstation at the same time, and you only need one software license.
Q: How can I get a quick overview of your product?
A: Feel free to review software and keyboard areas of our website to learn more about features of the software and some configuration options. You can also make a request for an online or in-person meeting on the demo page.
Q: What is the best way to get started using Keyboard Trader?
A: First, schedule an in-person or online meeting. We can hear about how you trade, and help you figure out a good starting point for your keyboard and software setup. Even though all of our configurations are adjustable, most traders end up wanting to start with our sample configurations just as they are. They were built for the ultimate combination of power and control, and were each tailored for specific trading styles.
Q: How long will it take me to build my own configuration?
A: If you decide to build your own configuration, a simple one might take just an hour or two to build it, test it, and start trading. More advanced configurations involve more planning and tweaking. But before you assume you need to build your own configuration, we recommend you fully explore our sample configurations. They have each been improved upon over many iterations.
Q: Can I try out the software before I commit to getting a keyboard from you?
A: We do not recommend that. Even if you just want to use a demo version of our software, we still recommend that you get one of our keyboards. Without one you will likely miss some major benefits. (Call us for advice if you believe your situation is unique). But we urge you to consider getting a keyboard from us isn't a major "committment" at all. Instead of "selling" you our keyboards, we take deposits for them. And if at any time you decide not to use our system anymore, you can return your keyboard for your initial deposit back, minus a monthly charge based on the time the keyboard was in your possession.
Q: How should I decide between your "Pre-Paid" or "Transactional" pricing model?
A: If you trade light or moderate size, or expect it to take you several months to incorporate Keyboard Trader into your trading arsenal, the "Transactional" pricing model will probably be significantly cheaper for you. If you trade a lot of size, or expect to use Keyboard Trader quite heavily right away, the "Pre-Paid" plan may be slightly cheaper.
Q: What is the RTD Server and how can it help me trade?
A: Simply, the RTD Server it is a connection between Keyboard Trader and Microsoft Excel. How it can help you trade is completely open ended. You can automatically trigger macros (trades and other actions) in Keyboard Trader by the changing of Microsoft Excel formula values. You can also control Microsoft Excel my creating macros within Keyboard Trader and triggering them from your keyboard. In combination, these tools allow you to configure a trading system that is part manual/part automated, or help you reach other specific goals.
Q: What kind of technical background is required for building my own trading system with RTD Server?
A: Generally you want to have solid experience writing formulas in Microsoft Excel. Depending on what you want to do, programming experience is usually not required but will be helpful.
Q: What if I'm not a programmer. Will you help me set up the system to work for me?
A: Some things we can advise you on very quickly for free. For more complex topics like developing a custom trading system, we offer consulting on an hourly basis.
Q: How can I decide whether to choose Keyboard Trader with Microsoft Excel/RTD Server to configure my trading system or to buy another system?
A: It largely depends on your goals. If you have a flexible budget and need to build a fully automated system that can run around the clock by itself with top notch speed, you would probably want to look elsewhere. If you have a lower budget, are good with Microsoft Excel programming, and like the idea of building a system that allows you to perform some tasks manually (such as entries with a keyboard) while automating other tasks (such as risk management), you might love ours.
Q: What if I just have a special use case for your connection between Keyboard Trader and Microsoft Excel rather than a comprehensive trading system?
A: Then it may just take a few hours to get comfortable. Ask us about your needs and we can shed more light.
Q: Can you provide a cost comparison of using Keyboard Trader with Microsoft Excel/RTD Server versus using another system?
A: Most software that let's you build trading systems costs a significant amount of month more per month than we charge. Some software may require you to host your "algorithms" on a dedicated server. Our cost (outlined on our pricing page) is generally less expensive because you host the system in your own environment.
Q: Can the connection between Keyboard Trader and Microsoft Excel be used to control any trading application?
A: Yes. Whether you trade futures, equities or options, and whether you use one of our API-connected platforms or any other, our product can help you execute your trades as long as your trading platform allows inputs from Microsoft Excel to control order execution.
Q: Does Keyboard Trader or Microsoft Excel have to be the active application for the keyboard to control Microsoft Excel?
A: No. Although a few caveats will apply, generally if you press a key on your Keyboard Trader keyboard, it will control cell values (and optionally other formula results) in Microsoft Excel. This is a huge benefit as it allows you to concentrate on market data.
Q: Can you give me some examples of things I can do with RTD Server?
A: There are a wide variety of use cases; here are a few examples:
- (1) Have formulas written in Microsoft Excel which automatically calculate profit targets and stops using whatever formulas you want. Use your keyboard to turn this behavior on or off, and adjust the stops/targets with your keyboard too
- (2) Run live profit/loss analysis of your trades in Microsoft Excel, and use this to automatically control your trading
- (3) Time stops
- (4) Turn flags on/off from your keyboard. The flags can be read from your Microsoft Excel formulas to control an external trading application
